Week 2: Watercolor!

I dried all the children's shirts and here's a picture of all of them wearing them for the first time!

This week, while I was out of town, Elaine, Hannah and my mom taught the class. They talked about watercolor and the children made two paintings. The first involved painting to music and cutting their paper and sharing their painting with the other kids to make one painting!

Then, Elaine taught the students. They made a peaceful landscape out of a watercolor background sunset with a black construction paper tree in front.

Here's the group with their finished landscapes!

Great First Day

Thursday we tie dyed shirts with about 10 children. They had a blast! Their joy and excitement was contagious and their creative hearts taught me so much. Below are some of the pics my mom took to mark the moments!

Tori helps two girls put rubber bands on their shirts

This little girl, Jalanda, didn't want to get a picture with me, so I didn't make her. A few minutes later she calls to me: "Miss Megan I'll get a picture with you now" I hesitated a bit before coming over to her and she said "Can I PLEASE get a picture with you, PLEASE!" So eager! I wish we were all that eager to call on God.

btw, he's smelling the shirt....

Oops, the gloves were way to big. I forgot to buy small gloves (do they even make disposable gloves for kids?)

Kyra! This little girl was so funny. My mom tells her that I'm gonna help her tie dye and she loudly exclains "Who's Megan?" I hear her from the other side of the room and come over and tell her that I'm Mega and she says (fwi she's never seen or met me before) "I love you!!!"

More quotes from Kyra:
"I'm not just a smart cookie, I'm a funny smart cookie!"
"I'm a good leader! I'll let everyone else go before me"

Looking at Hannah [my little sister] she says:
"You're a tall girl, so you must be older than her [pointing at me...]"
She was very surprised to find out that Hannah is three years younger than me!

Showing me her drawing (we decorated the "peace sign" after the tie dye) she says: "These are God's hands, holding up the angels....and the peace symbol"....!!!

Jalanda, soaking her shirt!

Me and Asia!

Those are Kyra's bunny ears behind the head of Alexis and me.

Dyeing Shirts with Sophie

My first project is Tie Dyeing T-Shirts! Since I wasn't sure how Kindergartners would react to the project I invited my friend Sophie over yesterday to try it! Here's the pictures:

About this blog!

This is a blog about my Gold Award Project: Teaching Kids to Love Art. My goal through out this whole thing is to do fun art projects for Kindergartners through 2nd Graders to enjoy creating art. I will work with the Charles E Davis Foundation every Thursday this summer doing fun projects with the 10 to 20 kids that go to their summer program. and when me and my family and a team of 20ish others travel to Honduras later in the summer I will do similar projects for the children attending La Providencía Academia (Providence Academy) for three days. I'm blogging about the whole thing so check this weekly for updates! Most of the blog will be dedicated to photos (btw I've never written a blog before....I'm much better at taking pics than writing, so we'll see how this goes!)
